SCHEDULE - SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

For many of you this will be your first experience of walking within the boundaries of an operational railway and you will find that the underfoot conditions and general environment differ from those found outside. The brief guidelines and requirements set out below have been prepared to acquaint you with the conditions and to help ensure that the day will be accident free and enjoyable for all. Please therefore take a few moments to read through the attached notice and the following points:

  1. Visitors must be sufficiently fit to walk over the viaduct and the pathways back to the main road. This is a distance of approximately 2 miles and will involve negotiating steps and slopes. Visitors must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The walk management team reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone whom they consider does not meet the above criteria.
  2. Injuries resulting from slips, trips and falls are some of the most common forms of accidents which occur in the railway environment. All visitors should therefore pay continuous care and attention to the underfoot conditions throughout their walk.
  3. Walking on railway ballast is very hard on the feet. You must wear stout boots or shoes.
  4. When crossing the railway lines do not step or stand on the rails or sleepers; both are often smooth, greasy and slippery.
  5. In general, it is usually easier to walk along the ballast away from the sleeper ends rather than between the rails but care must always be taken to avoid the trip hazards resulting from ground based railway infrastructure equipment.
  6. Visitors must not touch or interfere with any line-side mechanical equipment, cables and services.
  7. Visitors will only be allowed to enter the railway at the official access point at Ribblehead Station and they must leave via the official exit north of the viaduct.
  8. The boundaries of the section of line open for the walk will be clearly defined by fencing and are being protected by Network Rail from ongoing railway activities. Outside the permitted area the railway remains operational and access to visitors is strictly forbidden.
  9. In several parts of the open area secondary fencing has been installed at the top of the railway embankment. This may offer safety protection from hazardous drops and steep inclines; in others places it is to prevent sheep straying on to the line. In the interests of safety visitors will not permitted to climb on to or over the fencing.
  10. In order to prevent damage to the masonry visitors are not permitted to climb on to the stone parapets at either side of the viaduct.
  11. It is intended that visitors will be allocated to a group to be guided over the viaduct. Please remain with your group.
  12. Finally should you have any questions or require assistance during your visit please contact any member of the walk management team. They are here to help.
