What should I wear?

The Ribblehead area can attract some very interesting weather even in summer. Your part of the world may be fine but Ribblehead may be wet cold and windy - so please make sure you are equipped with waterproofs and warm clothing. The walk although not long is on uneven ground with ballast and sleepers to walk over so you should make very certain you have appropriate footwear - preferably sturdy walking boots. The organisers will refuse admittance to the walk if unsuitable footwear is being worn.

Will I be able to get refreshments?

Yes, hot and cold drinks, confectionery, locally produced cakes and biscuits, will be available as well as hot bacon rolls, burgers produced by a local butcher, hot soup etc. Food and drinks will be available from early morning until late afternoon.

Are there toilet provisions?

Yes there will be mobile toilet booths on the station site.

Is there disabled access for the walk?

We very much regret that because of the nature of the walking surface, the walk cannot be undertaken for anyone with a physical disability or in a wheelchair.

How far is the walk and how long will it take?

A Maximum distance is between 1 and 2 miles. The actual walk itself over the viaduct is about half a mile. It will take approximately 1½ hours to complete the walk.

Is the walk OK for children?

We have been advised by Network Rail that due to safety reasons no one under 14 years of age is allowed on the walk. Toddlers and babies will not be permitted to be carried in baby slings or child carriers.

How do we get to Ribblehead?

Shuttle buses will pick up people from Horton in Ribblesdale car park and the overflow car park at Chapel le Dale. Buses will operate from 8.30am from the Horton car park with the last bus departing Ribblehead for the car parks at 5.30pm.

Trains will only be operating between Leeds and Skipton and between Carlisle and Langwathby. Connecting rail replacement coaches will connect to the trains and these will stop at Ribblehead. If travelling by train, you are strongly advised to check the special timetable at www.settle-carlisle.co.uk or contact National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.

Will we be allowed to take photographs from the Viaduct?

Yes but marshals will have to ensure walkers only stop momentarily and are generally kept moving.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes you can unofficially but a couple of things we would ask you to remember - its not that easy walking over the viaduct as the surface underfoot (4 feet or 2) is ballast and sleepers and also we would ask you to 'scoop your dog's poop'.

Will there be a telephone enquiry facility?

Telephone enquiries will be accepted between 6pm and 8pm Monday to Friday only on 0794 169 0087. Orders for tickets cannot be accepted by telephone.

Can I walk across the viaduct on my own?

No, groups of walkers will be accompanied by a guide/marshal to ensure the safety of all participants.

In the most unlikely event that the walk has to be cancelled at short notice how will this be advised out?

If practicable, those people who have booked on the website will be emailed as soon as we know. Local press and media will be contacted as soon as possible. Please be aware that there is no mobile telephone coverage at Ribblehead.

What else can I do?

On completion of the Viaduct Walk, walkers will be given the opportunity to join a Ribblehead Tour lasting approximately one hour. This is a historical tour featuring the archaeological remains of the site of the Ribblehead area and construction site.

Ribblehead Visitor Centre will be open and there will be a number of stands and displays for you to visit. The Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line will have a shop selling momentoes, gifts and ice cream. There will be a childrens tent to keep the under-14's busy.
